Our story

A church woven into Sterling’s history.

First United Methodist Church is the oldest church congregation in Sterling and Whiteside County, with roots reaching back to 1838. Some of Sterling’s earliest Methodist services were held in the cabin of city founder Hezekiah Brink, who helped organize the congregation and remained an active member for more than 30 years.

The church building at Broadway and East Fifth Street was constructed in 1856. Brink himself helped make some of its bricks. Nearly two centuries later, we continue to gather here for worship, fellowship and service to our community.
